Bastard Nation Action Alert!June 06, 2003 IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED IN ONTARIO TO STOP DISCLOSURE VETO BILL . Bill 60 would impose $ 100,000 Fine.Ontario's Bill 60, a private member's bill, will reach second reading
in the Ontario Legislature on June 12, 2003. This bill purports to open
records to adoptees, but contains: a disclosure veto; a $100,000 fine if
adoptees do not comply with the contact veto outlined in the bill; and
conditions which make current search and reunion methods ILLEGAL.
PLEASE WRITE or CALL the 3 political party leaders and the bill's
sponsor, Mr. Wettlaufer, and explain why this conditional access bill is
unacceptable. All Ontario residents should write their own MPP as well. Bill 60 treats adult adoptees as if they are both perpetual children who
must have their birth parents’ permission to access their own birth
certificates. Bill 60 also treats adult adoptees as potential criminals.
Bill 60 PROHIBITS the adoptee from making contact with birth parents without
getting identifying information from the government, either under Bill 60
or through the Adoption Disclosure Registry. Both of these scenarios give
the birth parent a disclosure veto. The maximum fine for contacting a birth
parent without getting identifying information from the government is an
OUTRAGEOUS $100,000.
Under Bill 60 an adoptee could be fined up to $100,000 if:
- Their adoptive parents gave them the names of their birth parents and
that was the only information used to contact the birth parents.
- They used only non-identifying information to complete a search and make
contact.
Ontario Residents: Please remind the party leaders and your MPP that
an election is coming up soon and that their response on this issue
will affect your vote.
