But it doesn’t matter. It’s dead, anyway. Adoptees still remain second class citizens in Texas. 🙁

One senator, Donna Campbell, was able to kill a clean bill that had not only bicameral support– but a companion House Bill 584. This senator is the adoptive mother of 4 children.

Now think about this, let it settle in… this senator, who is also a MEDICAL DOCTOR, is willing to deny her own adoptive children the same rights to access their own records, including health information. (I presume that her children don’t know who their birth parents are– but maybe SHE got their information somehow, so the rules don’t apply to HER). Imagine, a MEDICAL DOCTOR who is willing to disallow a patient who is an adoptee to have the very information that SHE, as a DOCTOR, would most certainly want to have if she is to be able to treat her patients to the best of her ability. If having accurate medical history on a patient would enable her to be the best physician she can be, then she is hurting HERSELF as well as her patients.

As an adoptee, I’ve been denied access to certain genetic tests because I can’t provide a family history because I’m not allowed to KNOW that history. (I was born and adopted in Indiana, another closed state with a dirty law and a nasty disclosure veto that can be made to exist even after the birth mother has died, forever if she so elects.)

The fact that she would deny even her own children their heritage and their legal original birth certificates for passports and other governmental services– and potentially, life-saving medical care for want of a genetic or medical history– is reprehensible. Texans in District 25 need to look at this, look at her Lege history, and VOTE this senator out of office! Her patients who are adopted people also need to “vote” for another, adoptee-friendly physician.

Oh, and “Senator Dr. Campbell”, if you happen to read this: Just because you adopted four kids doesn’t mean that you truly support the rights of adopted Texans OR your patients who are adopted. Your job as a mother is to support your kids and their rights in society. Your job as a physician is to support the health of ALL of your patients. Your job as a Senator is to ensure that Texas enacts laws that are FAIR to ALL Texas citizens. You have failed on all 3 counts, Ma’am.

Thank you so much to BN for this update and the links! When I emailed/facebook/tweeted the Texas Senators yesterday about SB 329, Senator Jose Menendez responded (via Facebook), reiterated his role as co-author of the bill and stated his full support.

**He also stated that we should also be contacting the members of house of representatives as well as the governor’s office so that this bill can be passed this legislative session.**

I have included the email addresses of the members of the house below as well as the governor’s office. They had to be transcribed manually since they are not listed (each member’s page brings you to a contact from similar to the one above). Please contact them if you are able.
