Thanks for writing this, Randy. I never met Reuben, but I knew about his work, and I did know Annette a little bit. They are real pioneers, and importantly, were wiling to own up to mistakes and misunderstandings in their early careers.

The growing of medical care and maternity wings available to women is very disturbing but expected. The rate in Indiana, where baby boxes reign supreme, is horrifying. But then we have so-called pro-lifers who love to preach, especially online, “if you don’want to get pregnant then don’t ae sex.” One that I talk to goes so far as to mourn babies yet unconceived. Apparently, there’s not enough sex going on out there. TheUS is beyond broken, and I see it getting worse.

I did know Reuben, encountering him regularly at Conferences, corresponding with him, more than a few lunches, dinners, and late night conversations. He was that rare combination: revolutionary thinker, elegant Gentleman, essentially good man. One of my favorite memories of him is sitting next to him at a Conference when the speaker was deriding ‘the 60s’. Reuben leaned over and whispered: ‘I don’t know why everyone makes fun of the 60’s. I rather liked them. I wish they would come back.’ I learned many, many thinks from Reuben, maybe the most important of which is ‘to follow the money’ in adoption, that it’s fear and poverty that results in Women losing their babies to Adoption and that it’s from what we now call Red State America, small towns and rural areas that are the source of so many adoptions. Rural hospitals are closing now all over the country and the ones that are surviving are often closing their Maternity Wings. To be pregnant and on Medicaid with no place to turn, no way to pay for pre-natal and Maternity Care much less to support a child while alone, jobless, or with a minimum wage job in retail or fast food leaves mothers and fathers terrifyingly vulnerable. Adoption, usually through an attorney, or Abortion seem the only alternatives. I remember a presentation by Reuben in Traverse City astonishingly prescient, maybe, prophetic, about precisely this ….. well, what can I call it, besides exactly what it is, a Tragedy. God bless Reuben Pannor. May ge rest in the deepest of peace. He was the Truth’s Devoted Servant.
