Despite being raised by U.S. citizen parents and having no memories of her country of birth, the woman is in active immigration removal proceedings that threaten to deport her to Iran, where the U.S. has not held diplomatic ties since 1980. Her father, a decorated WWII U.S. Air Force veteran, survived a German POW camp and death march before bringing her home to the U.S.

We are concerned with the citizenship rights, privileges, and protections for all Americans. As an advocate for the civil rights of both domestically and internationally adopted people in the US, however, and with knowledge of the historically poor treatment adopted people are subjected legally on state and federal levels, our letter/testimony focuses the legal citizenship and identity challenges we have faced for decades. We believe that SB313 addresses at least one challenge in the State of California. We hope that this bill will encourage other states to follow California's lead...

Unfortunately, many adoptive parents did not research or verify citizenship status at the time of adoption or follow through on the citizenship process. Some say they were unaware of naturalization requirements and believed citizenship was automatic upon adoption finalization. Some claim to have been misled about citizenship procedures by their adoption agencies, courts, lawyers, or federal immigration authorities. Some believed that it was up to the adoptee, at the age of majority, to choose their citizenship status. In some cases, adoptive parents disrupted the adoption, and either “rehomed” the children they brought to the US or turned them over to the state foster care system where they lingered with no legal closure.

Big news! We’ve hit a key milestone with the Adoptee Citizenship Act and we need YOU to speak up for citizenship for ALL adoptees. Join us for a Virtual Rally on Twitter this Wednesday to demand that lawmakers pass the Adoptee Citizenship Act, H.R. 2731, and ensure citizenship for ALL adoptees.

On Wednesday, September 23rd, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration & Citizenship will discuss and listen to evidence regarding “Immigrants as Essential Workers During COVID-19.” During this time, a statement by Adoptees for Justice will be submitted to the Subcommittee. If the statement is accepted, H.R. 2731 will move onto markup, the next step in the legislative process.
