There is no state interest in keeping original birth certificates sealed from adult adoptees to whom they pertain nor does the state have a right or duty to mediate and oversee the personal relationships of adults. The debate on the release of OBCs to its adopted citizens is small v large government issue. Small government should win this one.

As of today, Georgia-born adoptees 18 years of age and over, can obtain their Original Birth Certificates without condition or restrictions...When we started over 25 years ago only 2 states viewed adopted people as worthy of equal documentary treatment under law. Today that 4% has grown to 30+%. For the geographically-minded, this means that 60% of the Deep South has fallen to the Bastard Banner. putting the region only behind New England with its 100% compliance.

Georgia-Born Adoptees! Mark July 1, 2025, on your calendars. That's the day your Original Birth Certificates will be unsealed--no restrictions or conditions.

SB100 passed on April 2, and on May 13, Governor Brian Kemp signed the bill into law.

We are concerned with the citizenship rights, privileges, and protections for all Americans. As an advocate for the civil rights of both domestically and internationally adopted people in the US, however, and with knowledge of the historically poor treatment adopted people are subjected legally on state and federal levels, our letter/testimony focuses the legal citizenship and identity challenges we have faced for decades. We believe that SB313 addresses at least one challenge in the State of California. We hope that this bill will encourage other states to follow California's lead...

Over 25 years ago Ballot Measure 58 restored the right of all Oregon-born adopted persons to obtain their OBCs without restrictions or conditions. Thousands of Oregon adoptees and their biological families have benefited from that measure. Since then, Oregon had led the nation by passing further legislation to secure openness and transparency in its adoption system, access for the adopted and their biological parents to adoption files and courts records, and to dispel overall adoption shame and hypocrisy of the past and into the future. Oregon is by far the gold standard for adoptee equal rights in US. The Oregon adopted automatically expect to be treated with dignity and respect.

This record and reputation is endangered by HB2901, a bill to legalize the use of Safe Haven Baby Boxes sanitized as “newborn safety devices.” A previous bill went nowhere, but HB2901 has already passed the House 50-10 and is now in the Senate Early Childhood Behavioral Health Committee.

A hearing is scheduled for Thursday April 17 at 1:00 PM. We need to kill this monster now

Georgia 1-Step Closer to Full Bastardization: SB100 on the way to the Governor!

Georgia is 1 step closer to being the 16th state to acknowledge the right of adopted people to their own Original Birth Certificates!

On April 2, the last day of the 2025 session, the House passed SB 100 (Andee's Law) by a vote of 145-14. The bill restores the right of all Georgia-born adoptees to their OBCs without restrictions or conditions. Earlier the Senate passed the bill unanimously 55--0. Access also applies to a deceased adoptee's parent, sibling, or descendant.

Tomorrow is the big day in Utah! (February 4, 2025)

The House floor will vote on HB 129, a bill to restore the right of all Utah-born adoptees to obtain their Original Birth Certificates and other material without restrictions of conditions. Yes, you read that right: UTAH! The bill passed the House Judiciary Commitee 9-1-1.

Bastard Nation Action Alert. North Dakota: SB2284 – Clean OBC Bill in Senate Judiciary Committee, February 4, 2025

Currently There is no specific law that provides North Dakota-born adoptees from receiving their OBCs. Court orders pertaining to state and private adoptions are available, but only through a complex, confusing, and exacting procedure involving adoption agencies and birthparents who must give consent for release of identity. A court order can be granted “only if the petitioner demonstrates that disclosure will not result in any substantial harm to the individual about whom identifying information is sought.” How that absurd requirement is proven is not explained.
