Georgia: Update on OBC Requests – September 2025

by Marley Greiner

The Georgia Alliance for Adoptee Rights has issued the following uudate on OBC requests:

Update to the update: If you have applied for your OBC but have not yet received it or have received a letter stating that it could not be found and would like for us to try to provide further assistance, please complete the form at this link.
Original Update:
Hello Everyone! We have some updates and info for you from the State Office of Vital Records.
Vital Records has been working very hard over the last few months to adjust their system for all of the new requests for pre-adoption birth certificates.
Unfortunately, it has not been the smoothest process for their office, not for anyone who has applied and we all hope that in the near future, the process will become much easier as they updates their systems and procedures.
While Vital Records is working to process all applications within a 10-week time frame, they have stated that searching for pre-adoption birth certificates is a more lengthy and delicate process than searching for a legal birth certificate. Additionally, they had already made us aware that this time frame could be longer initially due to the surge of applications they expected once the law was in effect.
Vital Records reports that they have received over 300 requests so far! There were 229 received in July and 89 in August.
The great news is, as of September 18, 2025, they have almost finished processing all of the applications received in July!
This means that if you applied during the month of July, you should be receiving something in the mail very shortly – either the pre-adoption birth certificate you applied for OR a letter informing you that either 1.) more information is needed from you or 2.) there was now certificate on file for the information provided.
If you are one of the people who submitted an application in July and do not receive anything in the mail by the end of this week, please send us a message or email info@gaallianceforadopteerights.org and we will provide you with the contact information for the manager who has been designated specifically to help with pre-adoption birth certificate applications.
