In a landmark case in March 2018, Osmin Ricardo Tobar Ramirez became the first Guatemalan adoptee to win against the state of Guatemala for child trafficking. Through his adoption, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights discovered a multi-level business of doctors, midwives, nurses, lawyers, social workers, hoteliers, and judicial authorities that had orchestrated his and up to 35,000 fellow Guatemalan adoptions between the year of 1990 and 2007.
