I cannot stress this enough: “sending” and “receiving” parties involved in unregulated rehoming unlike those who have no intention to sever their parental rights but find themselves in need of temporary custody arrangements, do not follow a “child’s-best-interest standard. Neither “sender” nor ”receiver” are well-intentioned. Please stop acting like they are. Adoptive parents who rehome their “forever children” without regard to ethics or law no longer want the parental responsibility they signed up for and were approved for by social workers and courts. Those who receive these inconvenient children utilize the black/gray market do so for “adoption” (note the quotes), sex trade, or servitude. Each party trolls social media, underground networks, Craig’s List, and other advertising sources, seeking matches often with the assistance of paid third parties. Unregulated custody transfer is a nice name for child trafficking.

A statute outlawing unregulated child transfer of adoptees is not an over-reaction as some say, to a handful of cases. It is a reasonable and long-time-coming response to a decades-long pattern of child abuse, bad adoption practice, and ultimately child trafficking that has harmed thousands of adopted people both inter-country and domestic.

Big news! We’ve hit a key milestone with the Adoptee Citizenship Act and we need YOU to speak up for citizenship for ALL adoptees. Join us for a Virtual Rally on Twitter this Wednesday to demand that lawmakers pass the Adoptee Citizenship Act, H.R. 2731, and ensure citizenship for ALL adoptees.

On Wednesday, September 23rd, the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration & Citizenship will discuss and listen to evidence regarding “Immigrants as Essential Workers During COVID-19.” During this time, a statement by Adoptees for Justice will be submitted to the Subcommittee. If the statement is accepted, H.R. 2731 will move onto markup, the next step in the legislative process.
