AB 1302 has been introduced in the California state legislature.
Don’t Trust the Horse, Trojans!
This seemingly innocuous one-page bill is all dressed up as a pretty gift horse to give adults, who were adopted as a child, the right to their original birth certificate through a court petition and order. Look that gift horse in the mouth…
Problem No. 1: Non-adopted citizens born in California simply make request and pay a small fee at the Office of Vital Records for a copy of their birth certificate. The Adopted would need the expense of petitioning the court.
Problem No 2. The bill includes a DISCLOSURE VETO and REDACTION RIGHTS, which violates all California born adult adoptee privacy rights from government intrusion. It instead would create a NEW right to birthparents, who have under current law relinquished all rights, to control the narrative between an adult adoptee and the State of California. Mommy May I? The bill distorts and contorts a Contact Preference Form (CPF), which language and intent has been used honestly and effectively in 12 states, into a “Disclosure Preference Form”. Read that as a VETO.
____________
This bill reeks of horse manure. It STINKS! Californians Say NO! Equality is the rally cry in our state. Defeat AB 1302 by sending an email to the Members of the Assembly Judiciary Committee. Tell them to VOTE NO on the bill. Short and sweet. California adult adoptees deserve equality. AND… if you are further inclined, flood their phone.

Become a Bastard Nation Legislative Liaison!
Bastard Nation needs Legislative Liaisons in every state with laws that seal adoption records. We need eyes and ears in the legislatures, creating relationships and gathering information.
What does a BN Legislative Liaison do? They talk with lawmakers and their staff about adoptee rights and the laws that seal records. They distribute Bastard Nation position papers and FAQs to legislators and staff members. They record their conversations and report to the BN Legislative Committee.
They are organized, informed, friendly, helpful, and engaged.
What do you need to do to be a BN Legislative Liaison?
1. You need to live close to the capitol of your state.
2. You need to be able to appear friendly, even when talking with people who disagree with you or are just disagreeable, period.
3. You need to have a flexible schedule.
4. You need to agree with Bastard Nation’s mission: If you don’t know what that is, go to bastardnation.org, it’s right there on our welcome page.
Those are the prerequisites. If you are interested, click the picture of the capitol rotunda, and fill out the application form. We will be in touch and schedule an online orientation and training.
