I’ve been following the Safe Haven Baby Box campaign for several years, and this video totally creeps me out.
This is why I stay in the War for Bastard Justice.
This year, 12 states are debating bills to legalize (or expand) the use of Safe Haven Baby Boxes. Kentucky’s governor signed a bill last week, and boxes are expected to be opened in the state soon. See the Bastard Nation Legislative Page for details and various state pages for our testimony and letters. in opposition. Your state may be on the list.

What’s in the orange bag please?
I’ve never seen the contents, but SHBB says the orange bag contains information about the program and resources for the baby boxer. They don’t have to take it, of course.
this would be a good foia request
Thanks for writing. ‘v got a pile or records from various states that I need to get up here. It would be a mistake to think that every state that has a law is happy about it. SHBB Inc tends to bully it’s way through. Kinda Trumpy.
It is safe , legal and anonymous to safely surrender a newborn to staff at any hospital in the country . In Staff Fire Stations and Police Stations, Emergency Medical Technician as well as contacting 911 sore all Medical Emergency Providers that save these newborns by the Safe Haven law.
I am very well aware of the Safe Haven program. Bastard Nation has been opposing SH since 1999. I published a weekly newsletter on SH and baby abandonment for about 8 years.I’ve delivered papers on the program at academic and adoption reform conferences. I’ve testified in person and through submission against them, published op-ed pieces in newspapers, and appeared on national television. Safe Haven programs have never received support from adoptee rights and adoption reform organizations, and private and public child welfare agencies. Lots of adoption agencies and adoption lawyers oppose. Some have told me they believe the laws would never pass constitutional scrutiny. There’s a reason that if parents want to retrieve their baby, they can outside of proven abuse or neglect. (if they can figure out how to do it) since the states don’t want a legal challenge. Baby Boxes are simply the next step in the Born Under X project. Ask the French, whose anonymous birth law was created by the Vichy government to protect Nazis and collaborators, how that goes to this day.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes are opposed by Safe Haven advocates across the board: A Safe Haven for Newborns, Save Abandoned Babies Foundation, AMT-Children of Hope, the leaders in the original movement have been active in opposing SHBB laws. Importantly the National Safe Have Alliance opposes. You can go to our Baby Box policy page, referenced in this blog and read why we all do.
It may come as a shock but over the last 22 years I’ve become friendly with SH leaders and we get along just fine. We disagree on the efficacy of SH, but we absolutely agree that SHBB are evil and unnecessary. SHBB undermine the adoptee rights movement. Adopted people will not have their rights subsumed by evangelical “pro-lifers,” who today are the biggest roadblock to the restoration of our rights and have jammed up the adoption mill for years with our bodies and rights. — Marley
