On February 21, 2020, Connecticut SB113 will receive a public hearing before the Joint Committee on Planning and Development.  The measure is a clean bill that levels the playing field for Connecticut adoptees.  It restores OBC  access without restriction to all Connecticut adoptees finalized before October 1, 1983. Currently, those adopted on and after that date can receive their OBC without restriction.

Bastard Nation is not affiliated with Access Connecticut, but we have historically supported this bill which has run for several years. and come oh-so-close to passage.

Please support SB113 and send your written testimony.  Bastard Nation has already submitted our testimony. but as our custom, we will not post it publically until after the hearing.

Below is the Action Alert sent by Access Connecticut.

They have made it incredibly easy for you to send it.

Dear Friends & Supporters,

Things are moving fast! We are poised to make history in Connecticut by getting one fair and equal policy enacted that restores all adult adoptees’ rights to their original birth certificates. It’s time to submit testimony! We hope you will join us in helping to put our state on the right side of history this session. Connecticut adoptees are counting on you!

So here’s the deal, we’ve only got one week to submit testimony for this year’s bill, Senate Bill 113. Our hearing is next Friday so we need everyone’s testimony submitted by Thurs. Feb. 20.

Here’s how:

  • Who: Email pdtestimony@cga.ct.gov
  • Subject line: Support for SB 113
  • CC: info@accessconnecticut.org (we work with the clerks to ensure every single testimony is surfaced to legislators)
  • Say something like this: Please support and pass SB 113.
  • Say why you support it: “I am an adoptee”…”I’m a birth parent”…”I know an adoptee”…”I am related to an adoptee”….or even simply put “I believe all people have a right to information about themselves.”
  • Extra credit: Testimony is most effective when it is in your own words. Write plainly in your own style and voice and be respectful. Share pieces of your story. The personal is powerful. Elaborate with a few sentences or if you’d like more ideas, choose one or more points from our Position Statement or the list of additional points at the bottom of this page on our website.
  • Pro Tip: Don’t overthink it! Your support is powerful even with only a paragraph or a few sentences. If you need more inspiration, see other people’s testimonies from last year’s bill.
  • Complete by next Thursday February 20. Our hearing is the next day on Friday February 21 so we need all testimonies submitted the day before.

Thank you so much for all your support and most importantly, for taking action when it counts the most! If there’s anything we can do for you, please feel free to respond to this email. Thank you!

Sincerely,
Karen, Cindy, Eileen, Carolyn & Desiree
