West Virginia SB470

Kill the Bill! 

The West Virginia legislature is attempting to sneak through SB470,  a reactionary and adopteephobic “OBC/adoptee rights bill” that would (1) By default, redact all Original Birth Certificates of identifying information unless a biological parent specifically authorizes the release of the document via submission of consent forms to the Department of Health and (2) Require adoptees to have a high school diploma, GED or have withdrawn “officially” from school to receive the document in any form–redacted or unredacted.

WHAT??????

The “education requirement” has floated around the legislature for years, but never went anywhere, The redaction dictate is new, dangerous, crazy, and unprecedented in the history of the sealed record scheme to make adoptees invisible. It’s being whiz-banged through the legislature with no adoptee or bio-parent input–and apparently no public hearings.  It was only introduced on February 25, and passed the Senate on March 1!  Where did this monstrosity come from? Why is it speeding through?  We dunno. Ask them!

The bill appears on the Monday, March 6 agenda of the House Judiciary Committee

Our friend West Virginia adoptee rights activist Barbara Flaherty Fuller posted this message online:

So there is an absolutely abhorrent bill passed by the WV senate and I need your help killing it. The bill is SB470 and it pertains to opening Adoption Records. It is a bill that is completely against human decency.

Here is a link to the email she sent to West Virginia House members requesting that the bill be killed.

We agree. Our own letter will go out later today and will be posted on our West Virginia State page.
